A lot of people believe that they do not need downtime, but that is simply not true.
I cannot begin to tell you all of the horror stories of friends, co-workers, associates, supervisors, and bosses who became so caught up in their work, that they forget to take a break and just breathe.
I once asked a friend, a well-known work-a-holic, why he did not slow down. He explained that he got a rush from his job and the accomplishments he made at work made him feel good. There is nothing wrong with feeling pride in a job well done, but when it is all consuming your life and you do not make time for yourself, you only end up frustrated.
This goes for those of you who are social butterflies. After you get off work, you immediately head down to hang with your friends. There is nothing wrong with that of course, but you should make some time for yourself when you do what you want to do.
Here are a few suggestions for you to get some much needed you time:
- See A Movie By Yourself- This seems like a loser move, but trust me, when I’m stressed out, there is nothing like a seeing a movie with no one giving their opinion of the plot and what not.
- Go For A Hike Or A Walk- Yes, get out in nature, or at least a park. Take some time and breathe in that fresh air.
- Read A Magazine- Do not get one business related. Pick one that is on a hobby or subject that you like. Sit down and just read it.
- Try A New Restaurant- There is really nothing like food. Take a chance and see if there is a place you would like to try and go for it. Why not?
These are just a few suggestions from activities that have helped me. There are dozens of other ideas to try. Get out of the cubicle or office and just take a break. You deserve it.
