The social media platform is all the rage with young people, but there’s a new crowd flocking to Snapchat and they’re not all there for the toast filters.
It’s finally happened. You refused to move out of home, so your parents have decided to retaliate and invade the only space you had left to yourself: Snapchat.
According to new stats from ratings company comScore, the burn-after-reading photo and video sharing app is “rapidly growing” its user base of over 35-year olds, with 14 percent of US smartphone users aged 35 and up using the service (up from 2 percent in April 2013). Older millennials are also jumping on board, with 38 percent of US smartphone users aged 25-24 using Snapchat, up from 5 percent in 2013.
Young people still account for a massive proportion of Snapchat users, with 69 percent of 18-24 year olds using the service, up from 24 percent in April 2013 (users under 18 were not tracked.)
Clearly it’s not all about puppy dog filters and face swapping. comScore certainly attributes Snapchat’s growth in popularity to these fun “Lenses,” but says the addition of a feed of chronological snaps and videos, known as “Stories,” has helped bring the platform to new age groups.
