The world of digital marketing and social media is constantly evolving and it’s time for small businesses to truly understand how it can work for them and because of the success I have achieved in this industry, I have teamed up with Indeed; the world’s #1 job site to offer a small business based in Reading a day to pick my business brain.

One of the biggest challenges small businesses face as they grow in size is finding the right talent, and recruiting them. It is no secret that business owners are time, and cash-poor and it can be difficult to attract the right talent to a business. The solution? Indeed.

Indeed is a hugely popular recruitment resource for business owners, whose forte doesn’t necessarily sit with hiring talent. If you run a small accounting firm, a bakery, or are a mechanic, why would you be skilled in this area? Sometimes choosing your first hire can be the hardest – where do you start? How much should you spend? Indeed’s free-to-post product and vast number of active jobseekers makes it really simple. The site even supports employers with a series of tips for job postings.

In partnership with Indeed, I’ve created a series of simple steps to follow for creating the very best job description to attract top candidates. It’s crucial that you stand out from the crowd, and here are some ways you can do that with an online job posting:

1. MAKE YOUR JOB TITLES SPECIFIC

Targeted job titles are more effective than generic ones. Try to avoid internal language that may confuse the job seeker. Stick to standard experience levels like “Senior” rather than “VI” and keep the job title concise. Indeed data shows job descriptions that are 80 characters or less receive more clicks!

2. OPEN WITH A STRONG, ATTENTION-GRABBING SUMMARY

Your summary should provide an overview of your company and expectations for the position. Hook your reader with details about what makes your company unique. Provide an exact job location to optimise your job posting so it appears higher in job search results.

3. OUTLINE THE CORE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

Make sure your list of responsibilities is detailed, but concise. Highlight the day-to-day activities of the position. This will help candidates understand the work environment and the activities they will be exposed to.

4. INCLUDE A RANGE OF DIFFERENT SKILLS

Of course, the job description should specify education, previous job experience, certifications and technical skills required for the role. You may also include soft skills, as well as personality traits that you envision for a successful hire. Keep your list concise: including too many qualifications and skills requirements could dissuade potential candidates.

There are so many amazing tools that you can use, as a small business. Recruitment is extremely important and using a job site like Indeed which offers a free-to-post service, there is really no excuse!

Now for the fun part. As I said earlier in this article, I have teamed up with Indeed to offer one very lucky small business in Reading the chance to spend the day picking my brains. All you have to do is post a job on Indeed, and enter the competition here.
