Google unveils the final name for Android M: Marshmallow

M stands for Marshmallow.

That’s the name of the new Android operating system, Android M. People were wondering what M would stand for — back in May my colleague Emil Protalinski threw out foods that start from M, like macaroon, marshmallow, milkshake, mint, muffin, marzipan, mooncake, and mango sorbet. Now it’s official.

Marshmallow is merely the latest version of Android, following Lollipop, KitKat, Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich, Honeycomb, Gingerbread, Froyo, and Cupcake.

Android M will ship this fall. For now, if you have a Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, or Nexus Player, you can sign up for a developer preview here.
