Developed with input from the Audi Sport team that has dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans for much of the past 15 years, the 2017 Audi R8 is a 201mph exotic that can devour 500 miles without battering driver and passenger, or exhilarate with a 3.2-second blitz to 60mph.
Built by hand, the 610-horsepower V10 enlivens a quattro all-wheel-drive system that can vary power to each wheel nearly infinitely, giving the R8 the reflexes and poise of a pouncing cat. Like its Italian cousin, the Lamborghini Huracán, the $213,000 R8 has an alloy/carbon-fiber space frame. And while modern Le Mans racers may inform the design, its grille pays homage to ancient ancestors, the supercharged V12 and V16 Auto Union Grand Prix cars of the 1930s.
For those who want a more environmentally friendly supercar, the R8 e-tron can be built upon request. With nearly 680 lb. ft. of pure electric torque, the 455hp e-tron can whisper past 60mph in less than four seconds, while covering 280 miles on a single charge. And just to show off, the next generation R8 will include piloted driving. But once behind the wheel, why would you ever want to let go? — Mark Ewing
